Well I think it's important to note that Darwin observed and commented on natural selection which is a way evolution manifests, not necessarily developing the theory of evolution in its current form himself. His work was necessary to establishing direct evidence of the occurrence. Establishing the genetic rules for mutation and heredity only gave those observations more weight as a mechanism was developed that could explain them. Darwin was most likely the missing link between ideas and theory.
